Question All visual GUI - good or bad?

Together with a good friend and colleauge, I have developed a website with an interface that hopefully will make relevant pieces in a large collection of information immediately comprehensible to the visitor. This regardless of spoken languages, visualization education or computer knowhow.

We have choosen this method of navigation because we belive that the "high bandwidth" of the eye and the human brain makes it possible to find "gold-nuggets" in just seconds. We belive that the method of using image-, pictogram-, icon-based communication supports our natural talent to make a choise in just millioseconds. Something that written communication can never hope to acheive.

My question to this forum of infinately wise and experiensed members, do we acheive any of what we hope to?

Nb. You are all welcome to post a piece of graphics that links to your personal site, to this forum or whatever non-commercial website you wish to promote. Commercial sites though, must pay through paypal upon upload, so do choose the right button (hint! Free 5x5)

BTW - From the way you describe it, it sounds like a neat idea, but I hope you're not planning on reaching any blind web surfers out there, as they won't be able to visit your site at all.

Hi Curtis,

Thanks for your reply.
Our intentions are NOT primarily to attract blind users.
But if they come they come. Hopefully then with some braille-surf aids that future scientists will invent.
Re: FF, Safari and Opera we have had our priorities at other things. Our Time-Cost-Quality analysis have shown us that time to market is No:1, support for FF and others is No:2 (or 3 maybe...)

Curtis, did you try to upload a picture/link (with IE that is) and if so, did it work without problem for you?
We have heard from other users that have not found it intuitive and easy.

Just browsing this thread; here's some observations:

1) Apparently, your site is limited to certain browsers or operating systems. It gave me an immediate error for Firefox 1.5, so I didn't get to see the GUI at all.

2) Search engines cannot index graphics, if that is important to the goals of your site.

3) If the GUI depends on plugins, that will limit your audience.

4) There are still many people who use modems.

5) Graphics also cannot be used for the browser's "search" or "find" features, which are helpful on long web pages.
