"hollow" text in Photoshop

I have a question regarding text in Photoshop. I'm using version 6 and I would like to produce text that is "hollow." That is to say, that it isn't filled in with a color, only an outline of the letters would be visible. I would also like to be able to vary the thickness of the outline, if possible. If this is possible, then is it also possible to place other images behind the text and still be able to see them through the hollow text?

thanks,
darren

Hi Darren,

This is how I would do it:

1. Click and hold down the type tool icon in the toolbar.
2. Select the type mask tool from the popup list.
3. Type in your text.
4. While the outline is shown, click Edit/Stroke.
5. Set the desired attributes and...
6. You're done!

Hope that helps.

just a few comments, Allen. thanks for your reply but i couldn't get your technique to work. first, in Photoshop 6, I am unalbe to hold down the type tool icon and get a dialog box. i am able to use a menu at the top of the screen to define changes to text but i don't see a type mask tool.
second, when i try to select Stroke from the Edit menu, it is disabled, as are most options.
any more advice?

thanks again,
darren

ok... try this:

1. click type tool.
2. at top of menu, click the mask or selection type tool
see here for image:
3. enter the type you want and hit enter to accept
4. the type will be outlined and then do the edit/stroke.
5. stroke away

Hope that helps.

Thanks Allen, it worked. I feel a little stupid that I didn't see the text masking tool the first time you mentioned it.

It sounds like you are trying to hack into someone else's picture. Depending on how well the text was dumped on the img, I bet there is possibility it can be removed with some PS tools.
