PNG's can also be transparent, and semi-transparent.

Gifs have only 1-bit transprency, i.e. Transparent or opaque.

PNG-8 (8 bit, 256clr, GIF-like) has the same.

PNG-24 (or 32, however you look at it) can contain a full alpha channel, which controls transparency as a mask in Photoshop.

Unfortunately IE doesn't support this at all.

Actually, it does, but it just doesn't use that part of itself. There's a filter that allows PNG's alpha channels to be used, but you have apply it to every PNG yourself. Fortunately, kind people have written scripts. Google for 'Sleight' or see www.youngpup.net.

To save an alpha PNG in Photoshop, just make sure your open image has some sweet partial transparency, and Save For Web as PNG-24. Make sure "Transparency" is checked. TADAA.

PS.
IE screws up PNG in general: it also does something with the gamma information in it and this can lead to slightly darker PNGs when displayed in IE.

Send a message via ICQ to BuezaWebDev
If you're confused on how to make a gif transparent--just go to Save for The Web in Photoshop 6 / 7 / CS.

It will walk you through the whole process and compress the image's size and still sustain its quality.

Cheers!

transparent

You could also create a css style that has a opacity filter for, say, 50 percent, and give the image you want that style. So you'd get something along the lines of < img class="your class name" >
That works in all browsers except Opera and Netscape. You should code another line to use transparency in Firefox too.

Post Ulead GIF Animator

It's dead easy to give transparency to GIFs with Ulead GIF Animator.

http://www.ulead.com/ga/trial.htm

There's a little control boxy thingy that lets you choose the colour you want to be transparent.

Extra bargain - 100% cross browser compatible. But not Mosaic.

dhromed already kind of covered this, but I just wanted to warn you against using PNG's for transparency. Browsers are very inconsistent in how they handle PNG's in general, and especially how they handle transparent PNG's.

If you want a transparent image, you will have to use GIF.

maybe it has something to do with the type of image, like vector or bitmap...if i'm not mistaken it will be a lot easier to create transparency on softwares that use vector images...flash uses vector images, i've done some transparent animated GIF with it.

right...so to create GIF using flash simply click File>Publish Settings then check GIF, this will enable the gif tab, click the GIF tab to see its properties, then choose transparent if thats want you want or opaque (not transparent).
