Real Player and WMP crashing IE because of "download this video" popup

I have identified a serious issue under MSIE 6 and MSIE7 with RealPlayer 11. If a user has RealPlayer 11 installed and has set the "Enable Web Downloading & Recording" button during install (default option), our online multimedia courseware will freeze during playback of 2nd or 3rd multimedia file. Note that this happens when the user is playing multimedia under Windows Media Player NOT REAL PLAYER. So, Real Player is not even being instantiated.

I would like to find out how to disable the "download this video" popup in IE. I know I can just not check the Enable Web Downloading & Recording button, but I have 1.3 million users of my software and cannot have each one disable this.

I am not concerned about the downloading of videos, just the freezing of the browser when that popup displays. It does not happen when Real Player is selected as the media player, and it does not happen in Firefox because it uses Real Player.

Thank you for your help.

Can you embed the video in your site? I'm assuming that you are giving your users the movie file directly by providing a link? i.e. "movie.wmv" or what ever the extension of the movie is.

Hello,

I appreciate that suggestion but what we need to do is disable the pop-up or the plugin that causes that pop-up to show. It only happens on IE when WMP and Real Player are installed.

Do you know if there is there a way to disable the code that causes that plugin to activate and display "download this video"?

Is there a way to look at the IE code at the time the pop-up displays?

Thank you

off hand no, but there might be a work around. I'm not 100% sure I'm clear on which popup you're talking about either, I know a download window is offered if you were to download you're video. Can you create a screen shot with the offending popup? That would really help.

Thanks

Hi,

I am trying to paste the image with the download this video but I can't paste it. If you have real player installed on a PC and bring up any image (go to cnn) you will see a little pop-up that says "download this video" in the top right of the video.

This is the pop-up rpbrowserrecordplugin.dll.

I know I can just set WMP to not allow that, or set real player as the default, but I can't tell all the users of the courseware to do that.

Thank you

I dont think there is a way to do what you want in HTML or the other languages. It sounds like a problem with realplayer or windows media player. I think you're best bet would be to go on either of there tech forms and ask for assistance, this could be a bug that they havent found yet.

Sorry I'm not much more help

also affects FLV video with JW FLV Player

Just a note--I've experienced the same problem with realplayer 11 and video playback using FLV (using the excellent JW FLV Player). After the 3rd or 4th video, playback freezes. Addtionally, I have problems with newly opened windows in IE until restarting IE (even popups that do not contain videos).

Problem was experienced with IE7. No trouble in Firefox. No trouble if Real Player is not installed.
