Red face site for list of bands

http://bandz2list.tripod.com is a site for bands, labels, records companies, and studios to list themselves in a more central area of the web.

I like the idea of a single site to go to, to check for a band and so. And I don't know if there is already anything like it. Maybe except for a search engine... I think if you continue to update your site, it could really develop and turn successful little website.

Few tips on the "road to fame":

- get listed in search engines
- get listed in search engines
- get listed in search engines

- remove links to categories if you haven't got any entries
(it's frustrating if I click on a link and there is nothing)
- get some sort of button/banner, something like: "Band listed on Bandz2List", so you get some traffic back
- make a contact page, and advertise it, "contact us to get listed"
- maybe post on some forums where a lot of people go to who like music, maybe somewhere on mp3.com ?
- I found the background to be a little distracting, but maybe that's just me
- maybe a forum for music lovers and bands? (forums are tough)

That's my two (euro)cents. Good luck!

I had a message board and nobody used it so I took it down. I have those links to those pages so that bands know that they are there. so you don't like the watermark being fixed or the background picture?

Yes, communities are a tough.

What's pretty nice is a comment feature. Maybe if you ever have a seperate page for each band, add a small comment feature. So people can leave a though (without having to register). I guess you would need some sort of moderation though, so it doesn't get out of hand.

It's an MS IE only thing. Hence I don't like it.

That's another tip, test your page under different browsers.

browsers

I bugtest with Netscape 4.*, Netscape 6.2, IE 5 and Opera. I wish I had access to Konqueror at work, but I don't (I am working on getting on it though. ).

If it works with Netscape 4, it "probably" works everywhere else. Although Opera is acting weird on certain code too. I guess it's a a pain, but it'S worth it.

Search boxes are quite useful, if you have a lot of information, and sometimes it just helps to find the right stuff on your site.

Donations are a good thing if they are appropriate. For example, if you run a small site just for yourself it's not. It's very appropriate if you do a non profit thing. You can try what you want, if you have a strong userbase, tell them what you need it for and if they appreciate your doing, they will throw in some bucks.

As for table of content. It really depends - as always. I never use'em, but some people do. I guess it also depends on the complexity of your site.

http://www.paypal.com

Once you signed up, you can put a button from them on your site. It reads something like "Donate here". It's pretty cool, and a lot of people use it. So I guess if you tell people what you need it for and they like that, they'll give you some money.

Red face

See, I want like to do both help an organization and help myself out with maybe getting better graphic software or a class for Dreamweaver and build a better site. I just don't see people handing me money. I am too proud i guess.
Thank for the information.

Exclamation advertising

Maybe some advertising? Banners or such, but for that you would have to get some real hosting and move your site to a top-level domain (.com and such).

But before you go off trying to make money, I would suggest, that you enhance your site a little. Work on the design, work on the content. The content is most important. Try to work out some features that you think people would like on your site and add them. Once traffic goes up (to check you need a counter, e.g. http://www.sitemeter.com), you worry about making money and such.

By the way, you don't need dreamweaver to create a nice site. A text editor is enough, some patience and practise too. As for graphics, start of with Paint Shop Pro. Quite a nice tool and not as expensive as Photoshop.

Tom

http://www.namezero.com

A .com/.net/.org costs anywhere from 10 USD / yearly to 15 USD / yearly. Registrars are for example Register.com or Dotster. My personal favorite is Dotster, as that is the one I am using. Gives you 200% control over your domain, with all the options you need accessable over a web interface.

Question

bummer Well, I have listed most of the people that have contacted about being on my site. About 520 different artists. It there a easier way in doing a database for the artists information than manually?
