Help me build social networking portal

Hi friends,
I am a nonprofit and I am trying to figure out how to create a social networking site for my members and volunteers on a budget. Do you know where we could get some help with this? Any recommendation will be appreciated.

What features are you looking for in the social networking tool?

If you're thinking of something along the lines of your own bulletin board or forum, my hosting provider (IX Web Hosting) offers PHPBB2 as a complimentary add-on with their Business Plus plan. It's only $6.95 per month when you prepay 24 months, and includes your domain name registration. I've been using them for almost a year now, and I've been quite satisfied.

I will say this. My friend got a whole website designed similar to MySpace with login, picture upload, etc, etc. It's pretty much like a MySpace but for sharing knowledge.

The WHOLE thing done for like $200 and the guy is giving him free updates for life. The guy really did a lot of work too.

He got it done through rentacoder.com. I have used that website a few times and here is what I think of it:

1 - You can specify a project amount.. even under $100, which is nice.

2 - Money is held in escrow, so nobody gets paid until you get your stuff and are satisfied.

3 - Read reviews on the people you're going to consider for your project. If you find a new person who has no reviews like I did, just communicate with the person. If they are in good contact with you in a reasonable amount of time, if they can understand what you need, etc then I might give them a shot.

4 - Ask to see a portfolio of other work they've done if they have any.

5 - You can specify where you want to look for work.. countries such as the USA cost a lot more money, but if you want to try people from another country they might not always speak the best English, but their price is very very cheap. The guy my friend used was in Romania, but spoke pretty good English.

I'm using a free tool called in2community.com. They are in beta, but so far no complaints. I just embedded a line of code into a dedicated HTML page and got started (after I put a link on my home page so people could get to it).

It's worth checking out.
