I added the Options +Includes into my httpd.conf file in between the <directory> section.

I also set my AllowOverride to All (for some reason, the default in my build was none).

Once I get it completely straightened out, I would be more than happy to put all of my steps into a handy tutorial. I have quite a bit of experience putting tutorials together (my main site started out as nothing but tutorials on how to do stuff for your Dreamcast, so I've probably written between 15 and 20 tutorials in the last few years). I'll start working on it in the next few days (maybe over the weekend), and edit it once I get the SSI information straight.

EDIT - I also wanted to point out that I used apt and synaptic exclusively to install all of the server software, so the tutorial should be pretty universal for all Linux builds.

I've begun putting the tutorial together. You can check it out at http://dcevolution.net/DCHelp/Server_Tut/

It's still a little rough, and it deals mostly with SuSE at the moment, but I'll clean it up and try to add a little more universal info for all Linux builds in the next few days.

I've still got to add in a little more about configuring the various components (editing all of the config files), and I have to figure out how to properly get SSI working, but I thought I'd post what I've got done, in case anyone wants to peruse it and give me some constructive criticism.

I've done some more work on the tutorial (see link above). I've basically got all of the info in there now. I've color-coded some of the SuSE-specific info. I still haven't figured out how to get SSI working on my server, but I thought if I posted the steps I took, someone might be able to see what I've done wrong.

I still plan to clean it up a little bit, and possibly add a few more screenshots, but I think all of the pertinent info has now been included.

Woohoo!!!

I got SSI working properly on my server. It turns out, that I shouldn't have edited httpd.conf at all. Instead, I needed to edit default-server.conf.

If only I had saved a back-up copy of my httpd.conf file, so that I could resotre it to its original configuration and make sure SSI would still work without changing httpd.conf at all.

I will be adding the info about default-server.conf into the tutorial soon.

Is that a SuSE special? (the default-server.conf)

I really don't know for sure. It's linked in this section of the httpd.conf file:
Quote:
### 'Main' server configuration #############################################
#
# The directives in this section set up the values used by the 'main'
# server, which responds to any requests that aren't handled by a
# <VirtualHost> definition. These values also provide defaults for
# any <VirtualHost> containers you may define later in the file.
#
# All of these directives may appear inside <VirtualHost> containers,
# in which case these default settings will be overridden for the
# virtual host being defined.
#
Include /etc/apache2/default-server.conf
I just googled for it, and found a few references on the web. Here is one example. That one doesn't mention SuSE at all, but a lot of the articles I found through Google did mention SuSE, so it very well may be.

Yeah, me neither. Includes are still a nice feature, allows you to break up the configuration into parts, even make some readable/writable to the user so he can change settings or maybe add vhosts without the need for root access.

Btw, great tutorial.

Thanks for the comments. I'm going to try to clean it up a little more this week, test it out on a clean SuSE install, and then it should be finalized.

Next step - figuring out how to get mail serving capabilities installed and set up for the server (SMTP and POP protocols).
