Question ? what to learn.

hey HtmlCenter.

i have a fairly good understanding of html and css, but would now like 2 broaden my knowledge by learning how to create the back end of a website. im leaning towards either php or asp. but am not sure which would be best. i have no knowledge of both and would like some recommendations. what is better ? asp or php ?

i have webspace which only supports php so am leaning towards that, but if you tell me asp is more powerful, or better to use then i would happily change .

plz help. cool smilie

Unhappy

I'm a PHP n00b, and I know diddly-squat about ASP; however, I've heard ASP is better, but I like PHP. Maybe one of the admins will come on and say something.

Hello!

First of all, if you say ASP, you really want ASP.NET, the other is no match what-so-ever. Secondly, it always depends (You saw that one coming, did you not?). If your webhosting is Unix/Linux based PHP is more than likely to be around, if you are on a Windows host you will probably have ASP.NET. That would be it.

Our personal favorite here at HTMLcenter is PHP. (Oh, and some claim Coldfusion, but you know... ). For example this lovely forum is written in PHP. I like PHP for it's open source background and it's quite portable too (works on Windows as well).

In the end, you decide.

I'm another one that knows nothing of ASP, so I can't really comment on that.

However, I am just at the tip of the iceberg on PHP, and I can already tell you that, with the right information, you should be able to do just about anything you desire, using PHP and SQL. It's also a fairly easy language to learn, especially if you have experience with other OOP's.

So when times are tight and you're low on cash, PHP can also make money!

No, ASP.NET is better in every which way. You would not want to learn an inferior language that is of no use to you. By the way, when you learn one, you shouldn't have much difficulties with the other. So for example, although my choice is PHP (and Perl) and I have never "learned" how to write ASP.NET, I still know my way around the code with the manual.
