resolution of jpegs on webpages
I was hoping somebody could help me. although looking at this site, this question is a little basic.
i have just uploaded my website and am trying to include text boxes that have gradual shading in the background. I decided to do this in box format on powerpoint and then save it as a jpeg before uploading onto the site. However, the resolution of the jpegs is very poor- and was wondering how i could improve it? and what software i should use? can i do this on powerpoint?
cheers - and thanks in advance

As Allen already hinted, you should use a graphic manipulation program.
There are three of those that are generally recommended.
If you have money, I suggest getting either Corel (boy that sounds weird putting that in front of this) PaintShopPro, or getting Adobe Photoshop. I believe PhotoShop is a good bit more expensive than PSP (at least, it was last time I looked), but they are both very nice programs.
If you're looking for a free program, try The GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program).

Hey all. i have downloaded the gimp software you suggested and am going through it. i have some questions
- is there anyway i can use the jpegs i developed in powerpoint- or is it better i just create new ones?
- The jpegs i created worked fantatsically offline- but when i have uploaded them there is just red crosses everywhere. i have double-checked and code and the links and they are all correct. is it a consequence of the origin of the jpegs?
many thanks

What is the resolution of the .jpg files? Little red crosses, huh? Hmm, maybe god is trying to give you a sign...
You created a .jpg file in ppt? It would be my guess to just make new ones because of the statement posted eariler, "powerpoint + web = disaster."

That probably is a result of whatever program you're using to create the webpages. What probably happened is that your webpage creation program has added the absolute paths to the images on your computer (like C:\\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\My Pictures\hello.jpg). Obviously, that path doesn't exist on your server, and the images wouldn't be there even if it did. So, you're getting the little red X's because it can't find the JPEGs.

Oh, so he might be talking about something like this? BTW, if it is using absolute paths, just go and delete the C:/location/folder/blah/ and make sure the imgs are uploaded to the server.

I finally managed to sort the jpegs out. It just a case of trying, trying and trying!!
The pictures i had created were already in the images folder and were all linked to the webpage- they worked offline, but when the pages were uploaded for some reason they didnt work. thankfully they work now.
I also decided to create the image on GIMP the size it would be on the webpage. This has also helped resolution of the pictures.
Many thanks for all the advice
