That's not entirely true. There are ASP interpreters for *nix/apache servers. The interpreter that tries to convert them to PHP and run them through the PHP interpreter is just one of a handful of utilities that can be used for that purpose.

Sun Microsystems has the most popular ASP interpreter for *nix machines. It used to be known as chillisoft, but is apparently called Sun One, now. There is also a Perl module that interprets ASP code, along with a few others.
